So I'm minding my own business, restarting my Steam client to check for any game updates and what do I see but this (click the image for the full sized version):
So if you're at all interested in Team Fortress 2, you'll know that a few months ago they introduced the concept of unlockable customization content for the characters in the game, in the form of Hats. They are typically not achievement based but some magical percentage determines if you are eligible to unlock one every hour or so and if you're lucky maybe you get one. Well, I guess it's ok but really who cares, they simply are aesthetic, but I have found exactly ONE hat after many many (far too many) hours of playing... It's annoying when others have a whole bunch of 'em. But fine, you wait long enough, you get 'em...
Now this, Pre-Order a different game of ours and get a free hat for TF2? I mean, yeah, it's not a bad marketing ploy, but we are all still waiting for an inventory trading system... Which in itself is kinda lame in a FPS... If I wanted a MMORPG, I'd go play one... I'm already grinding on getting lame achievements to get weapons which I will actually use... but hats? Really? That's what you're spending your time on?

TF2 Hats, yeah they did a pretty poor job rolling that one out. Apparantly they think that a FPS game should be a MMORPG instead. I don't know about everyone else but those are two types of playstyles which have literally nothing in common. Personally I believe they should have just given all the hats to everyone and allow them the ability to wear whichever one they want. Possibly even allow a person to make their own hats and use them kind of like the spray system they currently have implemented.
Their original idea was to have a trading system so people can trade for the things they dont have. This created a situation where about half of the TF2 players are getting mostly hats and the other are getting mostly weapons (which by the way everyone has now anyway because of outrage in the community, negating the need for trading weapons). All they have done is piss the people without hats off and made the trading system obsolete before they have even rolled out the implementation of it (which they haven't even rolled out to date!). Instead they are working on Halloween updates, new acheivements and marketing ploys like the one you point out here in your post. Pretty lame if you ask me.
I wish they would leave things things well enough alone hand out all the hats to everyone, as they are doing with the weapons and work on their laundry list of bugs which the community has been kind enough to list for them on the steam forums in a nice readable format.
Way to ignore your community once again Steam/Valve. Truly disappointing indeed.

Believe me its never lame it
Believe me its never lame it works really fine. HATS off to the person who thought of using such a concept , i mean you already have the game as a product but using the characters and the objects in the game as a marketing tool is something out of the box . Great Job.
